She untied the handwoven blanket, a gift from her grandparents, from the back of her saddle, and laid it on the rock, then settled herself there to take in the view of her ranch—her gentle and thoughtful mark on the earth.
After flipping through a few pages, she pointed to a picture of a young family seated on the beach. Three young boys sat in front of their parents, almost exact versions of each other with reddish-blond hair and toothy grins.

The situation stunk. He couldn’t imagine how he’d react if his parents had ever been involved in anything this bizarre.
In a stained red T-shirt and overalls with one strap hanging down, Rafe’s father waited a few moments before nodding. At least he wasn’t holding a beer. Or his shotgun.
Mom would be deemed a huge success if she achieved the goal of finding prospective mates for her offspring, because one never knew when your parents might pass on. Who’d care for you then?
“Who’s your daddy?” she whispered, though she had a feeling she already knew the answer. “He’s an angel,” the boy replied.
My parents moved to this country because they worried that we children didn’t have a good chance for survival in Northern Ireland.
