At the counter in her studio Melinda continued to stare out the window after Jake and Louie left her studio to apply for their warrants.
He lumbered on then swung himself onto the roof jutting out below the window. Despite the cold temperatures, sweat ran down his face and soaked the shirt under his jacket.
Hearing someone outside whistle “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” while I worked, I turned my gaze to look out the storefront window where I spied Jack, who rounded the corner. A pizza box from Mamma and Pappa’s Italian Bistro was perched on three of his fingers.
The velvet sky made a beautiful background for the barn, dressed like a grand old dame with a multitude of lanterns and fairy lights spilling from the open doors and windows to light their way.
I noticed a man making his way through the crowd that had gathered outside the front window.
She distinctly remembered locking the door and checking the windows when she turned in after their long security shift, but someone was definitely in the room with her now.
