Books from Childhood

We all have books we love. I have bunches and often reread them.

Recently, I moved several boxes of #1 and #2son’s toys from storage to the “toy room.” One box included books. When #1son visited the toy room, he saw the mini-books, picked up one, and said he was glad I’d saved them because he read every one.

I had no idea!

I went on a quest…

to look for more Moby Books Illustrated Classics by Playmore and found there were way more than the twelve I’d bought at a discount store for 50 cents. The books are sized 5 1/2 in by 4 in. The stories have been abridged so a youngster could understand the story. Illustrations are included as well. The covers are enticing. In the seventies and eighties, they were often purchased at grocery store or were included in Happy Meals. Titles include:

The Wizard of Oz

Black Beauty

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Oliver Twist

Ben-Hur

So far, I have acquired all but eleven. But I’m determined to find them to complete the set. If you see any of the ones

I’m missing:

The Call of the Wild

A Tale of Two Cities

The Prince and the Pauper

Red Badge of Courage

King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

Pride and Prejudice

I hope Little One will visit her VB one day, snuggle in the comfy chair, and read them—maybe with me.

Do you have a favorite book or two or three?

I love mysteries and because of that, I’ve written three (award-winning) ones. Scratch your funny bone with:

Emily Climbs by L.M. Montgomery. She’s better known for her Anne of Green Gables books, but Emily Starr wants to grow up to be a writer 🙂 The only book from my childhood I have kept through all my travels.

  2. Hey, Vicki. Good post. We’ve gotten rid of almost all “real” books because we just don’t have space for them in our lakehouse. But I have fond memories of being read to as a child by both parents, reading myself as a kid and having to have the book pried from my hands to get on with chores. And then as a parent, reading to my own kids. Books can take you anywhere. What a blessing to be able to read. Thanks for your post. I shared. 🙂

My #1son isnt very sentimental; so when he said he had read them, I was blown away. Kids do surprise us.

Thanks for the memories, Vicki. You mentioned so many wonderful books I remember. Of course, I love Pride and Prejudice. And for fun, any original Nancy Drew book. 🙂
