I confess I am a person who likes winter from Thanksgiving through the first week of January, aka, The Holidays. And then, I’m done.
The truth is I am not a cold-weather person at all. I can take the summer heat way better. My cold-weather life improved when I discovered UGGs. My feet stay warm, and I do, too. Darkness falls way too early, like four-thirty. Not very conducive to long walks.
Gee, Vicki, you sound rather negative.
Yah, I probably do. Complaining about the cold isn’t positive.
The Earth goes through four seasons—although four is somewhat debatable in my neck of the woods—for a reason. To renew and rejuvenate.
Winter’s perk is the plants go dormant. They sleep until late February around here. Then BOOM! Spring begins to creep in. Lovely flowers push up from the Earth and give great joy. Many of you may have noticed I post flower pictures on Fridays. I find most of them while on long walks with Handsome and the Adora-poos. I snap away when I discover the beauty around us.
And when Spring comes, people emerge from their homes. The days grow longer, and the kids are playing in the yards. Parents clean up the leaves and plant new shrubs and flowers. Splendor abounds.
I need rejuvenation too! I plop on my couch with a favorite beverage and snack and indulge with my best friend–good books.
Although I’m missing my long and not chilly walks right now, I know this will pass. I’ll plug in my earbuds, tune in to the Pandora BBC History podcasts, and look forward to warmer weather and enjoying what’s around me.

Hey, Vicki. Thanks for getting this post up. I’ve shared. I don’t mind the cold weather, though walking Charley this morning was a real pain. LOL When the weather turns frosty, I turn to the Mall to get my steps in. Gotta get my 10K you know. I have a romanticized view of snow because I’ve never had much of it. The poor folks up east and inthe northwest right now, well, bless their hearts. They’re much sturdier stock than I am. You know it also depends where you are in your life. If youi can stay home and not drive in it, then it’s not too bad and gosh it is beautiful. When you will hear me complaining is when we hit our upper 90s and 100 days in the summer! 🙂

Hi, Marsha: I went to Jazzercise class and bundled up because the studio was super cold. Below 40 is super cold to me. Actually, 90-100s is okay for me. We had some a/c when I was young. With school out, I spent tons of time outdoors. Didn’t bother me at all.

Hi, Donnell! I am counting down to the end of February when Spring peeks through and temps begin to warm. I love taking pix of flowers, but truthfully? I’m terrible with plants. I grow stuff that is Texas hearty.

I’m a summer person myself and like the same winter span that you mention–from Christmas until Jan. 01, basically. But in Laredo, TX–we (okay, I) whine at 60. It’s supposed to be at least 90 here. Always. I enjoyed your post, Vicki. And you’re right about the beauty and sense of hope that flowers produce. Given our climate here, all I can say is “thank God” for bougainvillea. You can’t kill them!

Hi, Leslie: It is fun to find Spring springing from the ground. Watching the leaves unfurl and the stems lengthen. The buds form then open into flowers. Sigh. I’m thinking about six more weeks here with a splattering of cold until April I’m so glad you like the post. Come back often.

Enjoyed your post. I’m right there with you in cold weather. Luckily, GT and I can escape those Up North snowy and way-below-freezing days because we spend winters in Florida! I do love the changing seasons allowing us fresh, new beginnings. Stay warm!
